Newport News airport is about 30 minutes further, but sometimes it offers better flights than Norfolk-depends on your needs.
Actually KMQI in Manteo is the closest with commercial air traffic, but it is very very limited air traffic. It is more of a private pilot airport, but they do have charter flights for those with ';money is no object'; expense accounts.
