My family and I are planning a vacation in the Outer Banks area from Aug. 8-16. We have never visited there and I am concerned about the frequency of storms and even hurricanes in that region during the time frame we are looking at. Is anyone familiar with the weather patterns at that time of year? We would hate to spend all that money and then be stuck indoors the entire time. Thanks for your help.
Severe weather in August
Mid-East Coast weather (by coast, I mean east of Appalachians to the Ocean) in summer is typically, Hot and humid. We have late-afternoon thunderstorms crop up and can be severe with winds, very dark skies, torrential rain, violent lightning and sometimes hail or the occasional tornado.
The good news is these ';cells'; generally move very quickly, so if you are chased indoors, usually you will only be out of luck for 30 minutes or so. There is the possibility for a dreary rainy day, but I wouldn%26#39;t call that typical in the summertime.
Now hurricanes are a different story. Totally random-totally unpredictable. The season runs officially from June 1 to December 1, with September and October being the months that in my opinion are most worrisome to the North Carolina coast. This is just going to be a gamble you will have to take. I wouldn%26#39;t let the possibility scare you away, because it is more likely that one WON%26#39;T ruin your vacation than will. A lot of people get trip insurance. I have vacationed every summer up and down the coast including Caribbean, and have yet to have a vacation squashed by one. Knock on wood!
