I%26#39;ve been vacationing on Hatteras Island for 15 years and always loved it. I miss the seclusion it once had. They%26#39;ve also made way too many beach access closures since the environmentalists got involved. I just can%26#39;t justify driving that far for a vacation that%26#39;s turning into the same thing I have at the Jersey Shore. My question is...is Atlantic Beach anything like the way Hatteras Island used to be? I want to be able to take my 4-wheel on the beach with my dogs and not worry about crowds of people all around me.
Thanks!!

No, I don%26#39;t think Atlantic Beach would be what you are looking for.
There is an area of homes north of Corolla which is called Swan Beach. You can only access it via 4wd as the beach is the road to get up there. It is the northernmost stretch of beach below the VA state line.
I have never been up there, but search it in this forum and you will find information.
I go to Topsail which is quite laid back, but is a lot further south. A lot of these places have different rules for vehicles on the beach and dogs depending on the season.

I appeciate the info! Does Topsail have 4-wheel drive access to the beach like Hatteras? I heard of Topsail and was checking that out too. It looks really nice and also seems pet friendly.
I don%26#39;t know what the rules are about vehicle access. I know at some times of the year, yes.
There are some Topsail Locals in the Surf City forum you could ask, or just go there and search the forum for driving on beach and dogs-I am sure you will find some info.
Thanks again!!
I will go to the forum and see what I can find.
