Hi, i live in Greensboro NC and I would like to go to the mountains. What is the closet mountain to me here in Greensboro?
help
You have several options, probably the fastest is to take I-40 west, then just past Winston-Salem exit onto US 421 north towards Wilkesboro and Boone. You%26#39;ll start seeing mountains as you approach Wilkesboro. Alternatively, you could exit 421 onto I-77 north to Elkin, then follow US 21 north into Roaring Gap and Sparta.
Or, you could just stay on I-40 westbound, and you%26#39;ll start seeing mountains around Hickory.

I would take Highway 52 from W-S, through Mt. Airy, and up to Fancy Gap, VA - hit the Parkway and have fun!
^ Yep, that works too.
I should note that, technically, the answer to the OP%26#39;s question is Hanging Rock. :)
do you know if they have cabins?
You can head straight North up 220 (Battleground) and be at the Blue Ridge Parkway in about an hour.
thanks, you all were really helpful
Michael, just curious--what kind of vehicle are you driving? Because if you can drive it from Greensboro to Roanoke in 1 hour, I want to get one!
:)
Yeah, technically Hanging Rock State Park would be the closest mountain. However, compared to the ones in the Blue Ridge and Smokies, it%26#39;s more like a really big ';hill';. :-)
i did some research and the closet mountain with cabin rentals is pilot mountain, only 55 minutes from my crib, and there is a drive-in movie theatre 16 minutes from the cabin. So I think im going to go that route.
If you want to go to the mountains to escape the heat, Blowing Rock is the first best place, about 2 Hr from Greensboro on 40-421 via Boone. If you want pretty views, Roaring Gap/Sparta area is less than 1.5 Hr. Fancy Gap above Mt. Airy is about the same and a good place to pick up the Parkway
