suggested itinery

We are hoping to holiday in the US for the first time April 2010 for 2 weeks .We will be flying from Manchester and fancy visiting places such as Ashville, savannah , but are open to suggestions .We would rather be based in just a few centres rather than a different place every night and we don%26#39;t want to do excessive mileage. We are looking for history, scenary and perhaps a few days at a beach( will it be warm enough?)At the moment we are planning flydrive but if anyone can recommend a tour company that does%26#39;t try to visit too many places we could be tempted- we don%26#39;t want to come home exhausted!

Hi Wirral! Welcome to the forum. We could help you better if you give us a little more information:

--You mentioned Savannah and Asheville, so I assume you wish to stay in the Southeastern US? Can you give us a general range?

--Who all is ';we';? Kids? Ages?

Without much to go on, I will suggest that you also consider Charleston, SC. It is in some ways similar to Savannah (lots of history, great food, charm, etc), and it%26#39;s a lot closer to Asheville if you want to visit both.

April weather can be cool at the beach, and it can be very warm. It%26#39;s usually not warm enough to swim, although it can be, especially if you%26#39;re from a colder climate. Still, it%26#39;s a great time to be at the beach, so you should definitely include that in your itenerary.

Beachwise, you might consider Southport/Oak Island. It%26#39;s near Wilmington and on toward the beach (southern NC). Southport is quait. Oak Island is a good beach, lots of rentals. Wilmington has a nice waterfront area with shops and cafes, etc.

NC weather can be strange. I%26#39;ve laid out in my swimsuit in December and seen snow in April. But will probably be windy and nice at the beach.

Asheville has lots of crafts, some college type pubs and bars. In April there might be snow or it might be 70 degrees F.

There is some history along the Outer Banks too. First Wright Brothers powered flight. The Lost Colony at Roanoke Island. Google those and see what you think. One caveat, The Outer Banks aren%26#39;t close to much and so It%26#39;s a long drive from most cities. It would be a rental car/senic drive trip.

Hope that helps some.

Each of the following would give you plenty to do within easy driving time to fill 3-4 days:

Tidewater Virginia, including Williamsburg.

Asheville, for sure

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail incl. Louisville

Charleston, for sure

Atlanta

The only problem is getting from one area to another and ending up close to a major airport, e.g. Atlanta.

If you have not been, my first choice would probably be Washington, DC.

The water will be a little cool for swimming but plenty nice for sunbathing, walking, fishing, etc. April is the best month for Charleston and DC and fine for the others-maybe a little early for Asheville, depending on which end of April.

As you get closer you can count on very good feedback from this site. At least that has been my experience.
