real authentic North Carolina BBQ

My son is visiting from NY and has heard about ';North Carolina BBQ';.

We%26#39;ve lived here only 2 years and don%26#39;t know of any authentic places that serve great BBQ.

We live in Calabash...right near the NC/SC border on the coast.

Any suggestions?

Most of the places I%26#39;d recommend are around Fayetteville and Lumberton - but I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;s some good cue down that way. Remember - NC has two types of BBQ - western style with a sweet tomato based sauce and eastern style with a vinegar based sauce ( which you find down your way). It%26#39;s all good when done right!

Jackson%26#39;s Big Oak in Wilmington is good authentic easten NC barbeque. Search for the address...I believe it is on Kerr Ave.

It%26#39;s not too far from Calabash.

Thanks everyone !

Keep in mind that ';Eastern NC BBQ'; is different from ';Lexington style BBQ'; (and it%26#39;s even a bit different up in the mountains.

I%26#39;m partial to Lexington style which you can get west of about Durham.

Another vote for Jackson%26#39;s in Wilmington. Make sure you get the brunswick stew with it...........

Picked this up on the Trip Advisor Destin, FL forum:
