Restaurants, spas and more

We are getting closer to our trip to Asheville, please help us select what you think are some of the best restaurants and spas of the area. Also any suggestions of places to visit on our way back from Asehvile to Charlotte%26#39;s airport by car.

Thanks.

If you are remotely interested in US history, Kings Mountain Nat%26#39;l Military Park is located just across the state line in SC, just west of Kings Mtn, NC., 45 minutes west of the airport. If you take the ';southern route'; from Asheville to the airport in Charlotte, I 26 east to 1 85 north, you will drive right past the park and there are lots of signs.

The battlefield is small, mostly wooded and shady in summertime, easily walked in an hour, and there is a movie in the visitor center that explains and shows a re-enactment of one of the pivotal battles of the Revolutionary War, fought almost entirely between Americans with conflicting loyalties. The only British officer involved was killed in the battle.

Chimney Rock State Park is located near Lake Lure, along the old overland route between Asheville and Charlotte. Unbelievable vistas.

The spa at the GPI is impressive, expensive and gets a lot of press. My local favorite is the Secret Garden Inn and Spa in Weaverville, 15 minutes north of downtown Asheville. Very cozy and romantic.
