Traveling in mid-late october

Hi

we are planning our first trip to Okracoke Island this fall. Most likely around the 18th of oct for about 1 week. Is the weather still good for beach walks and possibly swimming at this time? We are traveling with a 3 year old. Can you recommend anything to see or do with kids? I mean of course other than playing in the sand :-) ?

We are planning on renting a house.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Traveling in mid-late october

October is a beautiful time of year. Perfect for beach walks, water may be chilly, but your 3 year old will probably not mind splashing at the shoreline.

You can rent some bikes to ride around the village. The Slushy Stand has bikes with carriers so your child can sit while you ride. He or she will enjoy seeing the lighthouse, taking a walk through Springer%26#39;s Point, and hanging out at the docks when the fishermen bring in the catch of the day. On the drive in check out the Pony Pen on the right side of the road. Go to the Variety store to purchase a kite for the beach.

There is little else to do on Ocracoke, which makes it so special.

Are you planning to drive on the beach?

Traveling in mid-late october

Well one can never guarantee weather but usually mid-October is good. It will really depend on whether (no pun intended) there is a cold front or hurricane around. It can get rather nippy particularly at night but it can also be very nice. The water is still usually is in the 60%26#39;s or 70%26#39;s that time of year. One thing that can be nice that time of year is a rental with a gas fire place in case it is nippy. It can make it cozy inside. The advantage to that time of year is the crowds are way way down. Still some people around, particularly fisherman but everything will still be open. Some things I would suggest is the pony pens (the 3 yr old might like that), the items Lynn mentioned, I think the Preservation Society Museum is nice, a drink at Jolly Roger (the 3 yr old can look at the pelicans!), maybe a walk at Springers Point.

Hope you have fun!

Kirk

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions! Yes, I think we will look into a rental home with fireplace! That sounds like a great idea.
