I made a 7:30am reservation from Cedar Island to Ocracoke on Sunday, July 5th. But then need the Ocracoke to Hatteras free ferry. I%26#39;m now wondering
if we%26#39;re going to be terribly backed up getting on that second ferry. Does anyone have any experience with the Ocracoke/Hatteras ferry?
Thanks
ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras in July... wait time?
You should be fine. Yes, it will be busy that weekend but during season that ferry runs often (it seems like every 15 mins.).
I went down and came back Memorial Day weekend. On my return trip from Ocracoke back to Hatteras I got the second ferry. Wait time was minimal.
The only time that you%26#39;ll really, really wait is on a busy offseason weekend. The ferry runs only once an hour in the offseason and I spent the better part of 3 hours waiting for a third ferry due to a heavy line this past offseason.
ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras in July... wait time?
I would plan on a long wait but hope for a short wait. July 4th weekend is the most crowded weekend on the island. We were there last July 4th and waited at least 3 ferries to get off the island.
You will be hitting Ocracoke right when the week long renters will be leaving. If you are not on a strict time frame, you may want to consider having lunch and then heading out.
I googled the drive from Morehead over the mainland to Nags Head and it was a little under 4 hrs. Does it make more sense to just drive and forget the ferries...or is the ferry experience interesting enough to make it better than the drive?
I really appreciate the input...it%26#39;s our first trip to this part of the country.
What sort of time frame are you on? If you are looking to experience the banks-the ferry system is a great way to do it; it%26#39;s part of the reason those of us who live in the enjoy it so much. Yes it is slower, but that is part of the charm.
We only have two days in the Outer Banks. We have the 7:30 reservation from Cedar Island to Ocracoke... that%26#39;s why I%26#39;m wondering if we could end up in a really long wait trying to move on.
