Sound side beach suggestions...

We discovered today that the sound water is MUCH warmer than the ocean. Do you have any suggestions on beach areas along the sound? We are staying in Duck. Thanks.

Sound side beach suggestions...

It is warmer because it is very shallow, maybe 2-5 feet. There is very very little beach there and the mud and weeds and marsh will not be to your liking, that is why not many go over to the sound. You can find an area here and there where there is a little beach but much of those areas are privately owned and not open to the public. Duck has a new city dock on the sound but I have been out there in my jet ski and there is no beach, just grass and weeds.

We stayed soundfront in Corolla a few years back and while it was great for kayaking and sunsets - I wouldn%26#39;t suggest it for swimming. I don%26#39;t know of any beach areas on the soundfront in the northern areas...

If you are looking for a nice sound-side with actual beach and nice water, the sound on Topsail Island is nice. There is a public beach access at the very southern end of the island on the sound side and a lot of people go there with small children for swimming.

I agree though, if you are looking to stay up north at areas round the OBX, the sound up there is mucky and not nice for swimming.

I grew up going to the sound when I was a kid, and took our kids there. Its fine, but we had a house in Southern Shores, where there is a beach for residents and guests. I%26#39;ll bet there is one somewhere on the north beaches.
